Picked up in a box of watch bands. Most were 1970s but this one I think is older. What kind of watch would it be used for? Thanks

To wear a pocket watch on the wrist. They can still be bought nowadays.

I was thinking a compass. It would have needed to be removed from the leather strap to use properly I would think.

Why not simply unbuckle the strap when you need to use it?
