Watch winder vs winding

If my watch is not running and I put it on the winder as opposed to winding it manually 20 turns, is this bad?

Nope, hand wind or winder - no difference. There have been zero studies to show a winder is bad for a watch (assuming: 1) the winder won't run 2,000 revolutions a day & over-wind the watch or 2) the watch has a 'slip-clutch' to prevent over-winding).

Only note is that you want to wind the watch before you put it on a winder. Most winders won't actually wind a depleted watch, they just maintain the wind.
