Ads from Natl Geographic 1940s and 1950s

The Girard Perregaux is from the May, 1958 Natl. Geographic. The rest are from the Oct. 1947 issue. Love the creative name Elgin came up with for their proprietary metal for making mainsprings; "Elgiloy". Really rolls off the tongue. If I ever have a son, I know what his name will be...

Vintage watch adverts

Hi, I love all the old American watches, and collect Bulovas. It recently came to light a link to old newspapers around the world, and there are literally millions of old adverts going back 100 years or more, many containing old watch ads. I have seen many Elgin, Wittnauer, Benrus, Waltham etc.etc. ads from 1920's up to 1980's, and as I was only searching for Bulovas, Think what you could find for your favourite watch brand!
Here is the link-Wikipedia:List of online newspaper archives - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, so go for it all the US states there, all the little local dailies, hundreds of thousands of ads in millions of papers, easy to search, go look and have some fun!

.... Was all those Hamiltons shown on a tan pig skin leather band ? Was that what was originally suppied? pjh
Something to keep in mind is that illustrations like that were not meant to be technically correct. The artist was trying to communicate impressions. And he chose colors that he thought were best for conveying those impressions. In magazine ads like that if the strap color in the painting actually matched the strap supplied by the factory it was more likely to be a happy coincidence rather than anything that was intended.
