I note that much discussion and pride is regarding the Daytona, GMT and Subs...not too much is expressed regarding the Presidential Oyster Perpetual Day/Date (which after, many years of wanting one, I finally bought mine this New Year).
My watchbox shows my latest acquisition.
Probably for the last 10-15 years I've admired the day/date, but choked on the price. I decided this new year to finally do it and make the purchase.
I guess you youngsters consider the day/date to be an "old man's watch", but to me it is the epitome of what a Rolex is.
With all that said, my readings within this forum has kindled an interest in the Daytona.... I have the feeling that my next watch is going to be one (assuming my wife doesn't nix this grand idea!).
Interestingly, I kinda hide the watch under my shirt sleeve. I am embarrased for onlookers to see such an outrageous display of affluence, I guess. But, for me personally, I get a thrill everytime I look at the watch.

Hey Saul,

You've sort of hit the nail on the head. For better or worse, the DD tends to appeal to a <ahem> more mature buyer. And given that most forum participants tends to be in the 50 and under crowd (many folks 60+ aren't particularly comfortable with computers) you don't see a lot of discussion about the Day Date.

I turn 40 in a few months and have been wrestling with the question of "is a Day Date right for me at this stage?" I haven't made a decision yet - but I do like yellow gold DD's! :thumbup1: I also like the platinum DD with the ice blue dial.

I've always thought the Day Date was for:
A) the "old man"
B) Anyone is south Florida
C) Go back to A & B.

That said, I've admired it but it's never been one I can seriously consider as the 36mm is simply too small. I've tried more times than I can count to see how it looks, and I've never liked the small (to me) look on my wrist.

That all changed with the introduction of the Day Date II. I really like the Day Date II and would love to have one. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your view) my current mission has one & only one in the bomb-sight, so the DD-II will have to wait.

I'd originally liked the everose gold (not a huge fan of solid yellow gold) version:

But over the holidays I found one of the platinum's in stock locally & was able to try it on.

This watch didn't call to me - It screamed at me like a hacked-off drill sergeant. Hopefully one day... :thumbup1:

I submit that if the DD was offered in SS it would be much more popular amongst the forum members....I think its part perception, part case size, and part entry price that are working against the DD. However, I agree with Scott on the DD2.....as you can see from my wishlist.:cool1:

By the way, your DD is a great watch. Wear it with pride.:thumbup:

Congratulations on getting yourself, what is to me one of the all time classic Rolex timepieces and imo is instanly recognisable as a Rolex.

I hankered for a DD for many, many years and in the end was successful in achieving my dream.

I have to say that at the time I was in my early 40's. But if i could have afforded it before then, I would have been more then happy to wear one.

I prefer the Date/Day instead of the Day/Date

I know what you must be thinking, but let me explain.

The Day/Date has been iconic for the more mature Rolex owner such as Arnold palmer, Dick Cheney, Lee Iacocca, & the CEO types. OK Tony Soprano as well. :thumbup1:

To help me decide if I liked the look without taking the $$$$ plunge, I took a different route.

I had been searching for a TUDOR Date/Day in stainless and while on a business trip to New Orleans this past fall I ran across one really beat up at a vintage dealer.

Three hours of negotiations later, I walked out of there with it for a steal and immediately had one of my Rolex master watchmakers rework it entirely.

When it was finished I was blown away. My wife was speechless, (which is really rare!hmy. It was like reaching back to the early 70's with a time machine and picking up a new old stock watch. Way Cool!

I absolutely love it and because this watch is so much more rare, (not exclusive) than the Rolex Day/Date, I do not think I would try to replace it with a Rolex. For me, the appeal is in the fact that most everyone has no idea what this really is and for that I LOVE IT!!! In fact, I have NEVER seen anyone with a Tudor Date Day, which makes the concept all the more appealing.

Sort of variation and theme approach to this question you posed, but a very economical one as well. I mention it because the entire circumstance of acquiring this one sort of evolved spontaneously and unexpectedly.

Maybe, when I am Arnie's age I will pull the trigger, but not now.

I've been surfing so many websites reviewing DD's preowned. So many variations of Custom dials and bracelets (non original or aftermarket parts), and always questioning the prices I see.

I need to go visit the stores when I visit CA and NYC and try on a thick solid Gold DD! The Serti markers are my first choice. Then maybe the Roman numerals second. :001_wub:

At this point the DD is just not on my radar, I would put the money into another watch company like an A Lange or a Patek.
The DD just does not sing to me.

Beautiful. I love the dd in platnium with ice blue dial no dimonds though rn. I think the reason thier more of a 'old mans watch' is because at an entry price of 30k (aus) most people have 2 save for 10 or so years for 1. So by the time they have the money there in there 50's or 60's. I think its the sexiest watch ever period! And if it wasnt the cost of my adv yearly wage id have that watch and that watch alone. Congrats on such a beauty.

I Love Day Dates

I have always loved the Day Dates

In 1982 I bought my first Rolex a Datejust in steel

When I was 38 years old I cood afford my first DD (18238)

In 2002, I got a good offer on the new 118208 with the Oyster bracelet

But I missed the president bracelet. So I went for the ultimate DD the 118206 when I was 50 years old (2008)
