Hi,

Long-time listener, first time caller here :)

I'm looking for a watch I can surf and fly with (surfing has killed every single watch I ever had, though they none of them were in the class of the Omega). So far, the Seamaster GMT (2234.50) seems like the ticket - it has Zulu time, and great water resistance.

I do like the innards of the GMT Professional a lot more (2535.80), but am not a big fan of the skeleton hands. After checking it out in a store, it seemed pretty hard to read in the dark.

Are there other watches I am missing? Perhaps some discontinued models I should look into?

On a side note, I paid a visit to an authorized dealer here in SF today, and talked them down to a 20% discount on the 2234.50. Add over 8% of CA tax, and it doesn't seem like that good of a deal...

All feedback appreciated, and thanks in advance,
Vee

WELCOME to the Omega Forum At WTF:thumbup1: Mr Vee

well, the GMT Noir is a fine choice, and of course the 1128 movement
is rock solid.. the bracelet is very nice.. I can't find anything wrong with your idea:thumbup1:

I have the Great White version(2538.20) of the same watch and really love it, but I'm afraid it's been discontinued and getting harder to find.

a 20% discount is better than you might be offered many places, but I've heard of up to 30% discount from some AD's . my local AD's think 10 to 15% is a good discount:thumbup1:

glad to have you with us,

I have the 2538.20 and 2254.50 and wore the GMT this summer while crabbing in Oregon from the boat, although in hindsight this may not have been a good choice with all the action and loose ropes, grabbing floats, etc. I may have lost it, otherwise no ill effects other than next time I'll wear the G-shock,Seiko, or Hammy for such ice cold brutal saltwater work.

I have surfed but not anymore and although either of these watches will handle all that and more I myself would be a little leary of surfing with one; diving yes, surfing...well I'd be afraid it might get "lost" in a bad crash...but I wasn't a good surfer either.

I won't wear any watch while water skiing.

Great Water Resistance, Easy to read and Secure Clasp. But I still wouldnt wear it while surfing, not that I have ever surfed.

I've never put my 2254.50 through anything like surfing, and probably wouldn't. I'd reserve a lower-end quartz with a digital display for that.

I know Quicksilver has watches with preprogrammed tide data - seems to me like a watch like this would be ideal for surfing.

I've had two tide watches that died of water ingestion as well :)

Thanks for all the feedback - this is really helpful. Except now I'm all over the white face GMT as well. How long ago was it discontinued?

Either of the watches you were looking at would be great, but if I was going surfing I don't think either would be my first choice.
Thanks, though I'm a bit perplexed by the overwhelming recommendations against surfing with the watch. Is the concern that it cannot handle the water exposure? Possible mechanical damage? Other problems down the line?

In my mind, it's analogous to buying a Unimog and never taking it offroad :)

the 2254.50 is great,
i have never used it in the water, but from info i've seen the bracelet/clasp might be scrached by rocks or sand in the water. However, one of the biggest problems regarding high end watches is that people are so nervous about them. They are expensive for a reason, they are durable, and it wont look nearly as cool if you seem nervous about the watch

I agree. I wouldn't wear such a watch while doing something that's so rough. :scared: Regardless of the cost, it's the fact that this is a fine piece of machinery that I have respect for on multiple levels. I'd hate to lose something like that in the water - it seems like such a waste.

After visiting no less than four ADs in the Bay Area, I've been offered discounts in all places, ranging from the "no tax" discount all the way to 20%. Getting past the 20% mark has proven difficult so far, at least locally.

Looks like I might have to get my post count past ten to get the ultimate prize .
