Gentlemen, I have finally given up any resistence from buying an Omega Seamaster pro. I've been eyeing this watch since Golden eye :001_smile:. So after weeks of contemplating between new or pre-owned, I have now come to the decision to buy a new one (mainly for warranty and peace of mind)

Now another dilemna - quartz or auto? I intend this to be my regular watch, and does not intend to buy for investment or collection. So Im leaning towards the quartz because it is around usd800 cheaper (I live in the Philippines) BUT my friend keeps telling me that the sophistication of an automatic watch makes the price all worth it... :confused1:

So before I take the plunge, it would really help to know what you guys think. Your opinions will be highly appreciated. TIA!

Well Mr Fullspeed

Mechanical function makes the watch more desirable though this may be more in the eyes of WIS-types. It's a labour of love too because you'll have to have an auto serviced at regular intervals, around 3 to 5 yrs typically. Quartz are as you say less expensive to buy, indeed to service as well and are more accurate.

If you are not likely to gaze at a watch, perhaps marvel at the tick-tock of a mechanical movement and are primarily interested in a quality and accurate timepiece then go quartz and save all the extra cost and hassle us WIS-types put ourselves through ;)

If you may be likely to encounter boredom in a computer on your wrist, you may wish to consider auto.

That's my honest 2c.

Please feel free to ask further since as you know, we like talking

I have had my Automatic SMP for 12 months now and have worn it every day since I bought it. I wear it to work, in the pool and at the beach. I still enjoy looking at the smooth sweep of the second hand and the knowledge that there is a precision mechanical movement keeping acurate time no matter what I am doing. For me this is the best thin about owning a mechanical watch.

It ultimately comes down to which you prefer. Have you seen them in action yet? You may want to visit an AD, put them on your wrist, look @ the dials, and see which one you enjoy the most.

As far as accuracy: Quartz is nearly flawless.

And if I recall, the automatic is -4/+6 seconds per day. Mr. Houston would know for sure.

For resale: Automatics are generally more desireable and fetch a higher price than quartz.

Mr Time is right on resale values but if the watch is a keeper, a workhorse, a dependable, reliable friend, either route would suit you though quartz would save a lot of bucks both short and long term.

The -4 to +6 sec per day range is the parameters for COSC-chronometer certification. Most I believe ( at least in my own experience ) perform well within the range. The worst if you could call it that was just around +2. The best as you may have read elsewhere was +/- 0.10 to 0.15 sec as a daily wear.

Mr Darkheart

A warm welcome to OMEGALand. You're right of course, Mr Bond was first issued with a quartz and came through Goldeneye intact to star in further Bond movies :biggrin:

Glad you're enjoying your watch:thumbup1:

Hope you'll call in on us on a daily basis and share in the talk and fun we have here

Omega made some significant inroads in the quartz field in the 80's. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one if I wasn't sure the automatic was for me..

This is one of those situations where if you have to ask.....maybe a mechanical watch isn't for you... They're genuinely not for everybody.

Either one will bring you years of satisfaction.

It's nice to own an auto, that is, if you truly appreciate and understand the sheer craftsmanship and care that goes into making each and every one of them. To me, a quartz timepiece is something that anyone can own and one that can be mass produced in large quantities without much significance or story behind it. You can buy a quartz movement in a watch for $19.99 at KMart and it can run +/- 1 second per day, but it just wouldn't do anything for me or move me in the way an automatic timepiece does. This is why I won't buy quartz watches. Maybe this is the mind of a WIS talking, but do whatever you feel is right. Keep in mind that you may also have to change the battery in a quart watch every year or so, whereas an auto can go for up to ten years without ever cracking open the case (in the case of the Co-Axial). Oh, and I also love when every now and then I can feel the rotor move around inside the watch. It makes me feel like my watch has life and that it is dependent upon me to keep it beating. This is when you become one with your watch. You just don't get this in a quartz. :)

Mechanicals are fine for most WIS types but as Larry said they may not be for everyone. In Mr Fullspeed's case, Quartz may be just the ticket.

Remember of course guys that one of Omega's two flight-qualified watches by NASA is of course a quartz, the X-33 and the only watch deservedly awarded the title of Marine Chronometer is also a Quartz, again made by Omega. For some folk they are just the right way to go. The rest of us will ensure that Omega sells enough mechanicals ;)

I went with the quartz Bond SMP. It was much cheaper and I like the fact that it is always ready to go: no need to shake it every once in a while to wind it. I do own some automatic watches also, but I don't know the difference when wearing one or the other. If money were no object I would go with the automatic. When I do wear it, I like to shake my arm to keep the battery fresh :w00t:

Good one. Actually the Marathon is under contract for many different SARs (Sea Air Rescue) government units. NASA issued it last year to it's NASA divers, actually to all the NBL divers (Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory) at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Houston. :T I'm planning on getting one.
