Rolex Serial Numbers

Hi,
can anyone please direct me to the most accurate reference, or the official data chart to look up rolex serial numbers production dates?

i saw this:

The Rolex serial numbers are found between the lugs on the side of the case at the 6 o’clock side, behind the bracelet. This 4-8 digit number is engraved by Rolex on every watch and it can be used to determine its production date. Beginning in 2005, the Company started to also engrave the serial number on the inside flange ( or “rehaut” as it’s called in French ) between the dial and the crystal. Starting in 2008, the Company began to only engrave the numbers on the rehaut. This is correct?

thank you.

Yes this is correct till circa 2005, then they moved to the rehaut. This was started in 2005 and completed by 2007.
Then in 2010 they went 8 digit BUT random, so we can NOT date any Rolex after 2010/11

Is there any consensus on why Rolex considers dating a watch by serial number to be undesirable?

Since i dont have access to the corporate boardroom... my guess would be that they are attempting to fight fraudulent copies of their watches with a serial number system that appears to be random to the general public but likely has a cryptic pattern that allows them to identify (and date) a real Rolex.
