Hi all,
there was/is a bit of a debate going on at the Breitling forum about pronunciation of the brand (it is of course, pronounced Brightling - hope none of the naysayers peek over here.... :001_smile:).
SO WHAT??? I hear you Omega folk cry... and fair enough. BUT, it made me wonder, is there a correct way to pronounce Omega?
Is it: A: "O-mee-ga",
or B: "O-may-ga"?
or C: something else....?
(or D: who cares?)

Interested to hear your thoughts...
and happy new year for 2008. I still have a Seamaster on the top of the wishlist, but it probably won't happen in '08..

Greetings Mr Muttley

Well I looked this up a little while back and since it's Greek in origin, they call it O-May-Ga.

Hence I've since called it as such, explaining to those here in these isles why this is so. Folk here tend to say it the Bond way :biggrin::biggrin:

Have a happy passage into '08

Be well now

To me it is O-me-gar, as Daniel Craig pronounced it. However, you have to take into account regional accents and dialect. And according to various dictionaries, there is more than one acceptable pronunciation.

So don't sweat over it.

Well considering that Omega use the greek letter omega (Ω) as their logo, I always thought it was prounced o-may-ga.

Bond, James Bond

Ah yes ever since Casino Royale I have wondered if it is O-May-Ga or O-Mi-Ga
I thought the question was whether James Bond pronounced it "Oh-mee-guh," or "Oh-mee-ger"?

My son's mother used to get rather a chuckle from asking folks, "Why do you pronounce the name of the third 007 movie "Gold-fingah"? Answer: "Because they'd already taken that "r" for "From Rus-sure with Love."

Etymology is serious business.

While I am sure there is an official pronounciation, who knows?!?!? Even in our country, the word "route" is pronouned either -root- or -rouwt-. In New England, they give all their -r-s to New York and Pennsylvania as well. ;) So who knows??? *shrug* ;)

Well, regional dialects aside, the term is Greek as indicated by the Greek character on the dial, the Omega trademark, is an omega. It only follows that it would be pronounced as the Greeks pronounce it and the only way I've ever heard it pronounced.

But let us consult Merriam-Webster.

Well, as it turns out, it's all of the above.

Check out the etymology.

Very nice Grady. Once again I learn that my long held assumptions were false. Wish I could be correct as often as my wife.
