I realize some of us here on the BB have purchased pre-owned watches in the past. I have a few questions regarding this:

- Was it a concern if there was no documentation?

- Did you have the watch sent to Rolex for servicing thereafter?

- How/Did you get an appraisal for insurance purposes?

- Did you have the watch authenticated later on?

Thanks everyone.

1. Documentation: I purchased my 1984 with box but no papers. Did it bother me? Naawww. That sort of thing means something to collectors/speculators. I bought this watch to wear as it was a match to my wife's DJ. Rolex made gobs of DJ's and I don't ever see them as being "collectible." There are certain models that I'd be more particular on this point, and if the watch is a good enough deal, not having papers shouldn't matter too much. That said, I usually try to get "the complete package" when I buy...the DJ was somewhat different.

2. I've only used Rolex for warranty service, so no.

3. My local watch repair shop can do appraisals. Many private jewelery stores can do it or refer you to someone who can.

4. No need. I know how to authenticate. :cool1:

I bought mine from a local watchmaker I have used in the past,

It had no papers, but I trust the seller, so I am not worried

I did not get it authenticated, he specializes in Rolex so his word was good enough

At the time it did not need a service, and I will likely have it serviced where I bought it.

My insurance company just asked me to estimate the value and I insured it for that much

My Datejust came without a box or documentation. I was referred by a trusted jeweler to a pawn shop owner who was knowledgeable in Rolex watches and occasionally had one or more in stock.

A few years later I had the watch serviced by an authorized dealer and it was confirmed authentic. Even though I had no doubts, it was nice to finally confirm.

As John said, only if it's a collectible version, or I planed to sell it. If it's for me, as long as it's authentic that's good enough for me. Also, as many people do want the box & papers you can sometimes get a great deal on one without.

never serviced a watch out of warranty - so no.

Most Rolex AD's can get an appraisal done for you. Or refer you to someone.

- Did you have the watch authenticated later on?
No point to doing this later on. if you're worried about it, get it authenticated immediately. Again, most AD's with a watchmaker can do this. If you don't know the AD, they may not or will charge you. But if you have one you use, they should do this for you.

So, gotta ask. Why the questions? You looking at something? If so, come on - come clean.. What is it?!?!?!? tell, tell, tell....

I was kicking around a pre-owned DJ, possibly TT. I just can not see paying for a brand new one, when the resale plummets astronomically upon purchase. Worse than purchasing a new vehicle. Yes, I realize that no watch is an investment; but, it is the practical side of me that kicks on on this aspect.

Waiting to hear back on my taxes. If I get anything back, even only a few bucks, I will seriously start looking. Just trying to do some work ahead of time.

With that in mind............what are everyone's opinion of sapphire crystal vs plastic? Does plastic really scratch that easily?

Very cool.. Hope you find one..

Though unless you find a killer deal on a pre-owned, I don't know if I'd dismiss new either. With Rolex, you really don't take a huge depreciation hit like other brands. Sure, you'll lose some at first unless you can negotiate a great deal. But in most cases you'll probably be close to 'original value' after maybe 2 years. Plus, I really like some of the new style DJ's they're making vs. the gold dial most vintages seem to have. Of course, depends on what you're looking for. If you want a gold dial stick marker DJ, there's definitely no shortage of pre-owned ones. If you like the newer dials, you can sometimes get a better deal on new discounted than pre-owned.

I personally don't like plastic crystals. I scratch the heck out of them. To me, sapphire is the best thing since the wristwatch....

As the saying goes, plexi is Sexy!

If you were buying a plexi model for your daily driver, you might need to buff out the crystal once every couple of months or so depending on how hard you are on your watch. But both my DJ and my red Sub have plexi and I love 'em....no problems. But my DJ gets about twice a month wrist time, and the red Sub is about once or twice a week. So they don't see much wear, and I'm easy on a watch anyway.
