Hi Gary,

Unfortunately I am not well-versed in anything pre-1960s, so I can't really comment. It looks pretty good, but the picture isn't of the highest quality. Anyone that may be able to help will likely need to see a better picture. Best of luck.

My amateur opinion is that it's a re-finished dial. The hands, if correct, are almost certainly relumed, which is a turn-off. I'd stay away, but hopefully someone more knowledgeable will chime in.

It's certainly a refinished dial and relumed hands. I wouldn't pay more than $450 if forced to buy it despite it being solid 9ct gold, and would pass simply because it's a redial. That tells me it's a Dennison made case from the UK which isn't as sought after by collectors as the Swiss made models.

Hi and thanks for the replies.

I have been looking for a dress watch for a month or so and really like some of the old watches, but dont like it when the dials or hands are showing signs of age.

I do like this watch, I think it looks great and is a massive change from my "day" watch which is a Rolex Datejust with Oyster bi-metal bracelet.

What I am wondering (and please bear in mind that I am a relative novice) is why if a dial and hands have been professionally refinished and make the watch look back to it's best is this seen as a negative?

Cheers

Collectors want original. To us, refiinished does not look best if it isn't 100% true to original, and Omega redials are never 100% correct.

Hi, I appreciate what you guys are saying regarding "collectors" and even though I want and would like to own a few watches I dont think I would fall into the specific category as a collector.

I just like this watch and the re-seller says the watch has been serviced by a retired Omega employee but does not actually state that the dial and hands have been re-finished.

However, if I'm being honest I dont have a problem with them being re-finished as they look to have been done exceptionally well.

Below is the re-sellers own blurb regarding the watch and I would be grateful if you guys could advise if it looks and sounds cosher.

Rare vintage gents large solid 9ct gold Omega watch with a silver dial in stunning condition. Dating at 1959, the dial has gold numbers & hands. the dial reads omega just below the iconic omega symbol, the dial is in very good pristine condition, please check the pictures.

this 9ct gold gents large omega watch has just been professionally serviced by a retired omega employee to the highest standard using the best equipment available.it is full hallmarked dennioson ALD 375, has also has been polished and is in very good condition with no wear, (please check out the larger image's) a new crystal has been fitted to complete this original classic timepiece, the watch measures a large 35mm excluding the crown. case number: 923-54068 /375 9ct gold, the genuine omega gold crown is also original and still clearly signed, this is a sign of a well looked after lightly used example. overall this watch is in excellent vintage condition.

the movement, classed by many as one of omegas finest, cal 268 chronometer 17 jeweled movement with the caliber, and is running strong and keeping excellent time, as omega watches do,the movement is marked omega 17507079, this rare omega watch is in stunning condition and functions perfectly. the watch comes complete with a brown crocco glove leather strap, and is ready to wear with pride, the watch will be sent well packaged in a watch box which will ensure it arrives to you safely.

If you're comfortable with it then go for it. It's a nice looking watch.

However, a collector would have another problem or two with the description. The very definition of polishing is intentionally putting "wear" on the case to make it shiny so it can't have "no wear". Polishing removes metal and dulls edges which a collector doesn't favor. Second, the watch really isn't rare - but that's a word that's so overused it's almost comical.

It's not a problem if you like it and want a nice watch but certainly not something the collector would buy.

That's not a bad price for a solid gold Omega given all you've told us. If you could get us a picture of the inside of the caseback and the movement that are clear enough to read the numbers we could tell you the year and reference (model) number of it.

However, I have found this one, which I also like:

At present bidding starts at approx £620 but I think, but i'm no expert that it looks original?

What do you think

Cheers
