So i was at an extended family gathering this evening when my 30 something fashionista cousin says to me "wow NICE panerai" with an excited look. I thanked her and explained it wasn't actually a panerai but a LUM-TEC, and that part of the reason i had bought it was because of the panerai-esque case design and the vintage dial. She was genuinely impressed and asked to try it on, after she took off her own lovely cartier piece and slipped on the LT she proclaimed it was gorgeous albeit quite big on feminine wrists. I proudly whipped out my phone and directed her attention to the M-cobalt series explaining they come in the smaller 40mm and she was sold instantly! Placing an order after the long weekend (Australia) :)

Just thought i'd share what i thought was a pretty cool story. Not just because my sub 1k M52 was held in the same regard as a panerai costing 5x as much but also because in the space of 10 minutes i had convinced her that a Lum Tec would be a worthy addition next to her cartier and gucci pieces.

Maybe it was a "you had to be there moment" and no one will find it quite as impressive as i did, but i cant deny i've been that little bit more impressed with the heavy piece of tungsten on my wrist ever since!

Any one else have any stories of converting people to LT?

That's a cool story there!

I was a a local jewelry store last year together with my wife. We were just looking around and my wiife asked me "why don't you get a watch with a white dial for a change?" (I don't like white dials all that much - perhaps if LT comes up with one though...). The sales clerk cought that and asked if he could be of assistance... "Well... I guess I need a white dial watch then" I replied. So he started thinking "Omega... no. Rolex... not in that size (I was wearing my M6 once again), hmm... Fossil maybe?" on which I told him to spare the "hip brands that won't hold their value". He glanced at the M6 and said "as far as I know, Panerai doesn't have a white dial watch neither". So I told him that noooo... this ain't a Panerai... this is much more rare, comming from a small company in Ohio and this specific watch is ltd. to 100 pieces. THAT cought his attention! I then asked for his keys and "scratched" them against the case really hard, to show that this had no effect on the TC. At that time he was REALLY curious and asked, if he could try it on. I told him, that if he'd give me his cheap Seamaster in the meanwhile, that would be ok and I promised not to do the key trick on his watch:laugh:

Well... I didn't buy a watch this day, but I got a 15% discount coupon for a different store I had planned to visit anyway in trade for the LT website...

Cheers,

Marc

"Omega... no."
Why a "no" to Omega? :confused1:

The Aqua Terra, quite possibly the best looking watch Omega currently produces (IMO), comes in a white dialed variant. I personally partial to the grey "teak" dial version, which I'm currently saving up for, but the white "teak" dial version looks gorgeous as well.

He must not have been a very good salesperson... or at the very least not a very knowledgable one.

Off the top of my head I can think of two Panerais with white dials - the PAM49 and PAM113. Both Luminor Marinas in 40mm and 44mm respectively.

I was in a Breitling dealer on El Paseo in Palm Desert,(thats the El Rodeo of the Desert) and the guy behind the counter said "nice PAM". I laughed and said it's a Lum-Tec and proceded to walk out. I can't buy a watch from a guy like that.

7Schulz,

Don't be so harsh on the ignorant :)
Lum Tec is a micro boutique watch brand that is not on everyone's radar.
It's not a clone but a look a like which is fine by me because I do like the shape and simplicity of the Pam's watch case.
The M27 GMT is my daily beater and the Cobalt soon will be in the rotation.

100% agree. Absolutely.
The "statement piece" is great for the ego.

PAM has versions without the crown guard, but uses an onion crown.
Yep thats true, Ithe Radiomir case is distinctive in its own right with the CG and most times when you see a Panerai its usually a Luminor with a crown guard. Although thats about to change with all the 1940's style models coming out

I've had this happen mostly with my M24. I don't blame people. They're only getting a glimpse at like 6 feet away most times.

And didn't Lumtec make a very nice looking reverse lume watch with a white dial? Or even more than one?

I believe LT has produced two reverse lume models - the first generation tungsten M7 and the V5. They also used to and maybe still do, I'm not sure, offer a reverse lume California dial.

Yeah, the only "white" dial Lum Tec I can think of is the only Lum Tec I own the 1st of the Tungsten series. The Lum Tec M7. The whole dial is covered in Lum and looks off-white in the light. The whole thing illuminates in the dark with the numbers and markings in black. If there are any other white dial lum tecs (besides the ones mentioned here) I may have missed during my time away from the forums. I'd love to look them up.

Interesting what you're all saying about having the M mistaken for a Panerai... I've had almost the polar opposite, bizarro version of this experience.

The only time anyone has ever commented on a watch I've owned was when someone mistook my Stowa for a Damasko, which I was kind of shocked by since neither house is exactly cranking out units... Damasko probably even less-so (??). I was surprised he had even noticed it since it's a pretty understated watch. I asked him if he was into watches and he proceeded to take off and then hand me this.

Luminor Marina PAM00111 - Collection LUMINOR - Watches Officine Panerai

So, I've had the reserve experience, of having a Panerai owner mistake a watch from a less famous watchmaker for a watch from an even less famous watchmaker, and still be really excited about it lol.
