Hi there, I was wondering if anyone had seen these new models from Swiss Army out in the wild yet:

They look great - Swiss Army is definitely moving upscale. I was also wondering if anyone knew what movement they were using - particularly the large chronos. I would guess the 7750 - since I belive that is whats used on their Ambassador XL models - but they don't specifcy on their website (wonder why?).

They are nice but geesh are they expensive! I don't get that. A friend of mine about six months ago went out and bought a Swiss Army 500M quartz, and paid the AD 500 bucks for it. At the same time I got a Zodiac Oceanaire with a Claro-Semag automatic movement from an AD for $50 less. I don't get the whole high dollar quartz movement thing. But that's not why you started this thread, is it lepton? Sorry, I'll get off my soap box.

Again, they are nice watches, but $1,200 and they don't even tell you what kind of automatic/mechanical movement it is. I'd want lots more info before laying out that kind of cash.

Not all quartz movements are created equal - as we've discussed here many times. Some are repairable, some have higher tolerances to heat/cold etc. some are chillingly accurate.

???? The watches I saw were mechanical (self winding). BTW, they do look nice however.

I know that. My quartz rant wasn't about those particular SA watches, but the SA quartz my buddy purchased.

So how do you compare quartz movements, say an Eta G10 to a Ronda 5030D? And is an Eta G10 comparable to say an Eta 251.272?

Just an update to answer my own question:

The SSC Chrono arrived at a local jeweler this week, and it looks awesome. The chrono uses the ETA Valgranges movement, and it looks great through the see-through case back.

The one problem I had with the watch is that it's HUGE. MUCH bigger than the airboss chrono. Possibility the largest, heaviest watch I've ever had on my wrist. It's a Breitling Superocean X 2. I actually could not pull my standard dress shirt sleeve over the SSC. I mean, it is ridiculously big.

Not sure if I can live with a watch that big, but it looks great. And I think I still want one. Hmmmm...
