Hey I just talked to my local AD today, which I am there frequently. The store was robed at gunpoint by 3 guys. All had guns pointing at the back of 3 of the people that worked there. The broke in at 12 noon, customers inside. Nobody was hurt!! Thankfully!..

The only item's they took was all the Rolex watches. They did not steal the diamonds, money, items from the safe..etc... The came in quickly pointed the guns, made everyone get down, had them get the key, put all the watches in a bag and left. They got around 50 total watches. They missed the ones on the side case, which had the LV, GMTIIc, WG Daytona, Sub.

I talked with the AD, which is the owner, he was more than shook up, especially after having a gun put to the back of his head.

I was in a jewelry store with my wife 4 or 5 years ago in the middle of the day when an armed stocking masked smash and grabber came in and tried to smash one of the glass cases. An ex cop employee standing right in back of me pulled a gun from his desk drawer and took a shot at the guy who ran out the door into a waiting car. That was weird.

Most ADs that I visit have a buzzer lock so that they at least see who's at the door before admitting them. Somebody can still come in and pull a gun but 3 people together or someone with a stocking mask probably wouldn't be let in.

I'm glad nobody was hurt. The local AD that I visit has an armed guard pacing about at all times.

Oddly enough, if I remember correctly, someone was hurt at that same shop, but not over a watch. An employee's ex came in there and assaulted them after regular work hours.

I have seen a few news reports here and there of idiots trying to walk away with one or two extremely expensive pieces after asking to see them. In such cases, they usually don't get away. An example from YouTube:

These places should really have some kind of more security but I guess it is really tough to in some places. I wonder who would even buy these stolen watches... I doubt Rolex would offer the warranty on these pieces!

My AD has double locking doors. Still not much protection since a robber has a hidden weapon. The only thing locked doors prevents is someone in a mask, but a crazed idiot probably doesn't care about being identified.

We live in a crazy world.

I ve been to small jewlery shops in NYC where they can lock you inside too.

I wonder why they d lock you inside,, If someone had a firearm why would I want to be stuck inside with them? Makes no sense to me but they do.

Even with armed guards a dealer is not 100% safe cause the criminal mind will analyze the situation and figure out how to make it happen.

If some of these brillant criminal minds would only put that brain power to positive use,, they could do wonders.

At least no one was hurt!!

This happened to a Rolex dealer in a crowded mall locally late last year - three guys with hooded sweaters on simply ran in, pulled out hammers and smashed the Rolex display case glass, grabbed and fled the scene. No one was hurt. So far as I know no one has been nabbed.

I wonder how some of these ill gotten watches got fenced? I can't think of anything sucking worse than thinking one got a deal by saving a few hundred dollars only to find out 10 years later (at service time) that Rolex confiscates it as previously stolen!

This is from a Rolex robbery at one of their Rolex shows at a mall retailer in 1999 here in Nashville. They robbed the reps in a garage at the mall, and one person was killed. There have been no more shows here since.
Could be one reason they no longer transport the watches by car for shows anymore. They're all shipped in from store to store via FedEx, UPS, etc. More expensive & time-consuming I'm sure, but definitely safer for all - especially the rep transporting them.

While I was off duty in plain clothes, I actually had a guy ask me about my GMT. I was polite, but on guard, then he asked if he could see it up close.

I asked him if he wanted to see my Kimber (1911 .45) first!

He turned out to be ok and didn't realize how strange his question was.

You just never know!

I don't think asking someone to see their watch is such a strange question.

He'll probaly never ask anyone else. lol
