Show inherited this Elgin pocket watch but I can't find another one like it. Where there are only letters on the dial ends when I took the back off to see the serial number there were formulas engraved in the inside case, and nobody can explain what the formulas are and why they're there if somebody has an idea about the word or words that are on the dial, I appreciate the help and if anybody can identify the formulas, they may be why they're engraved on the inside of the case they would also be helpful. The one thing I can think of is that maybe the person who made the watch like to put show me the formula that it takes to create the watch as a signature.

The letters on the dial are a custom option that was offered by Elgin. Usually they have some meaning to whoever commissioned the original purchase of the watch. The 'formulas' you are referring to are actually coding by watch repair guys stating they have done a service on the watch at some point. The watch case was made by the Star Watch Case Company who were based in Elgin, Illinois and existed from 1899 - 1982.

What is the serial number on the watch movement itself ? With that i can provide some further information.

Hamilton was also known to substitute letters for numerals on their watches...usually but not always the lettering matched up with the owner's (last) name. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if some Swiss manufactures offered this service.
