I get the last number as a designation of the case material. What do the first 3 numbers signify? I would love to see an updated list that includes reference to the newer model numbers. Great insight though, Tony!:cool1:

IMO, the first three numbers are just an internal code that now covers several models.
For example - with stainless GMTs (although the case-backs had identical dimensions)
Rolex was stamping different numbers for various models: 16570, 16700, 16710, 16713 for TT.

In order to simplify things (and since the casebacks are otherwise identical) the new code is 2180.
As we know - "0" is for Stainless steel and for Rolex 218 simply means that it is good for
a whole family of GMTs - such as 16570, 16700, 16710, 16713
