On July 5, I packaged my 1665 according to the instructions from RSC (NYC) and took the box to the Downtown Main Post Office to be sent Registered Insured mail.

The only information provided by the tracking number is that the parcel was "Dispatched to Sort Facility" 50 minutes after they "accepted" the parcel.

The watch belonged to my late-father-in-law, was purchased to celebrate a still-classified NEDU event and, most importantly, was a wedding gift from my wife.

I had originally taken it to the only local authorized dealer (a chain store, where the sales "dude" was salivating over my watch) to have them send it in for service (my wife's father regularly took it to the old local authorized dealer -- a mom-n-pop fixture of the community that went belly-up in 2010). I demanded the watch back after the sales "dude" called me to say that "his guy" was willing to service it for less than RSC.

So, I sent it to RSC on my own, instead.

I've called the USPS service line, where they opened a case, since the watch has taken more than 5 days to be delivered, but so far, the only "result" was someone calling me from the wrong local Post Office to say they had no record of the parcel. They at least provided me with the phone number of the correct local Post Office, who told me not to become worried until "Monday or Tuesday."

Now, my stomach is turning summersaults.

Should I relax for a couple more days (as I'm about to go on vacation and basically be off the grid for a week) or should I officially commence freaking out?

I'm back on the grid, after a week of travel.

The watch arrived in NYC a week ago. Spoke to Rolex on Wednesday, to confirm the service details. (Interestingly, it will cost far less than the "deal" the sales dude's local "Rolex-trained" repair guy wanted to charge.)

That's the reason you can't tell where it is with registered....

Neither can anyone else. Registered mail....not very likely it's gonna get lost. It can freak you out sometimes. I once returned a watch to a dealer several states away and it took 3 weeks to show up. It can very arduous and very slow...beCAUSE it has to be signed for every time it changes hands and it has to be locked in a vault every night wherever it lands...and signed for when it is put in and signed for when it is taken out. Wherever it was last...that person is responsible for it. :) Glad it arrived safely. There is a reason RSC demands you used USPS registered and will not accept anything BUT USPS registered.

Now that being said...if you are sending things besides RSC I recommend that you use an independent courier and your own insurance.

That was enlightening, thanks for that. Just looked this up too. . .

Registered Mail (Domestic)

"Delivery information will provide delivery status or attempted delivery status when the item reaches its destination, it will not provide tracking of the item as it is enroute to its destination.
- Customers can obtain a record of delivery by purchasing Return Receipt Service."

I would rather travel to a RSC than take any chances with shipping my vintage Rolex in the mail. I've read more horror stories using the post when shipping a vintage Rolex watch. Granted some people are forced to ship a heirloom Rolex watch to a RSC, and they take the risk.
