My wife is looking at the Franck Muller Cintree Curvex and Rolex Datejust. Both are in stainless steel. The Franck Muller is quartz and the Rolex is automatic. My wife does not care much about the mechanism. She can customize the Rolex somewhat more with her choice of dial and bezel. They are both very pretty watches. The Rolex is somewhat common, but not necessarily among women's watches. The Franck Muller is a little more rare, but is battery powered. Any feedback on which watch to choose would be greatly appreciated.

For women, I'd suggest that you DO go for a quartz watch. It's just much more convenient, unless she plans on wearing it everyday for around 8-10 hrs (or keeping it on a winder).
You could check out watches by Cartier too. They make some good watches for women.

I'd pick...

a Rolex over a Franck Muller any day of the week. Sure FM's QC problems are fixed (supposedly) and this is probably a standard ETA quartz movement anyway, I would go with a watch and a watch company that has proven quality and durability. Besides, if she wears it everyday, she will have no problems winding.

In general, women couldn't care less about automatics. They love quartz because they can just dress and go.

Recently got an irate call from a professional woman who bought a high-end automatic. She was "very disappointed" that it gained 5 mins last month. Normally +10 sec/day for a non-COSC automatic (Cartier) wouldn't be bad. But it wasn't what she wanted.

Don't go with FM... They are completely overpriced. If you decide to ever sell the watch you will be far better off with a Rolex. Also, would you rather have a FM heirloom or a Rolex to pass down?

I hate to have a generalization... I think the best thing would be to ask her if she wouldn't mind having to possible wind the watch after not using it for a couple days.

Cartier is definitely a good place to go.... Check out vintage tanks, if she wouldn't mind winding herself every day.

This is true in family I always have too adjust my GF Rolex day and date. But for the price of the Frank Muller is going to be high. Get the Rolex

I agree with the sentiment that the majority of woman will not want to be bothered with a mechanical watch and would opt for a quartz given the choice. Given that, I guess the FM would be the choice, although I am not a fan of the design.

As an aside, the trashing of quartz movements solely based on the grounds that they are aesthetically offensive and inferior on a "high-end" timepiece comes across as somewhat condescending, not to mention annoying to have to often wade through. As an owner with feet in both camps (so to speak), I fail to understand the bias, beyond one of affectation of course.

I have to say that I agree with what has already been said. I am not much of a Rolex fan purely because I personally find them uncomfortable. I do however have a Franck Muller Casablanca and I think that it is the most overpriced and over rated watch I have ever owned. It's time-keeping, despite several attempts to regulate it is at best average and the quality is only okay. Extremely expensive for what it is. My FM has an ETA based movement, not that I have anything at all against ETA, but not on a Stainless Steel watch costing £5000!! I wish I had not bought it ( 5 years ago) but I am not prepared to take a huge loss in value if I sold it. It is the only watch that I have ever bought on impulse. I only wish that I had researched it prior to purchase and not been taken in by the "Master of Complications" hype. That slogan should be reserved for their specialist products.
As someone else suggested Cartier and JLC do produce lovely ladies watches.

Yep, if it's a quartz, I'd go with a Rado or Cartier for a woman. Rado has a lot of very nice watches for women for around $1000.
