Can anyone help me choose the watch for my husband's birthday please? he has always wanted a Cartier Santos 100 and he has looked at the steel/gold version in the past. I have found a couple of pre-owned versions at a price I can manage. One is auto and one is quartz. I am pretty sure he wants automatic, am I right in thinking they hold their value better as well? Also is it crucial to have papers if the watch is bought from an established bricks-and-mortar specialist dealer?

Thanks in advance

I'm no expert, but from what I know, mechanical watches will always hold their value far better than quartz watches. Besides, mechanical watches, if serviced regularly, can last you a lifetime.

A terrific looking watch. Yes, get your box and papers with purchase. Without those it could be a "Grey" market deal and if something goes wrong you may have difficulty getting Cartier factory service. Most Cartier hold their resale value in either Quartz or Auto. Cartier has a ton of "Brand Cache'" especially outside watch collector circles. I would venture to say 2nd only to Rolex.
I'd be very happy with either. Your Husband is a lucky man indeed.

Welcome! Men tend to prefer automatics. It must be the gearhead gene inside us. Nothing wrong with quartz at all, but if you can get the automatic go for that. Cartier makes some great watches and the auto will hold value batter. If the dealer is a Cartier AD then you should be fine without the papers but they do help with the resale value. You may want to purchase it with the right to return it pending a 3rd party authentication. Any good seller would allow this.

He's lucky to have a wife as good to him as you. What a cool gift!

Thanks for all the help and advice, much appreciated. Here is the photo from the dealer's website.

Once I've given him the watch I'll pass on your comments on how lucky he is - I tell him that constantly, not sure he always agrees!!

I see nothing wrong in the picture, but there are some very good fakes in this model. Be sure it is a reputable dealer.

Weclome to WTF and if without the papers see if your can get a three day return on your watch just in case. Automatic over quartz any day.

Update

Please keep your fingers crossed - last night he told me not to get one from the internet!! However I am buying an unused watch from a 'real' jeweller, still sealed with papers, and it can be returned within 7 days for a full refund if he doesn't like it. I think (hope) when he opens the box he will just melt. Only downside is, we'll be away on holiday on the actual day so he will have to have his present before we leave in case it needs to go back.

I will make sure he posts some pix after the event as long as we are still on speaking terms. You can all testify that I did plenty of research for this present. Once again thanks for all the advice, it was really helpful for making a big decision like this. I am now starting to see the attraction of these watches, maybe I'll put one on my wish list too.

Very good call to go with one from a brick & mortar dealer. We'll be waiting on the pics, but be warned: if he joins here and starts poking around there will be more watches lying around the house in no time!

...as long as we are still on speaking terms...
If you're not on speaking terms after giving him that watch, it better be because he's left speechless. If he balks or is less than ecstatically appreciative, then YOU should be the one not speaking to HIM!

If he doesn't believe he's a lucky man, just send him here and I'm sure we'll all straighten him out...
