Did you know that WATCH TALK FORUMS has support for mobile smart phone applications (aka "apps") which allow you to access WTF from your mobile phone? We sure do, and have for several months now. So I thought I'd take some time to familiarize our members and guests with how these apps work.
WHY DO I NEED AN APP FOR THAT?
You may be wondering why you would want to use an app to access WATCH TALK FORUMS. There are many different situations when you're away from a PC or laptop, where it would be nice to access the forum (vacations, business travel, and in general anytime you're not close to your PC but need a WTF "fix"). Remember too that some places of work frown on accessing non-work related websites (like discussion forums), so it could be less than prudent to browse WTF from you place of work.
You might also be saying "why not just use the normal Internet browser on my phone instead?" Well, you can access WTF using Safari, or other mobile browsers but it's cumbersome - particularly if you want to create a new thread or reply to a post. WTF has added code to our site to support two different apps which make accessing and interacting on WTF a much more pleasant experience on your mobile phone.

Tapatalk is a forum app on the iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, and Nokia. I've used it extensively on my iPhone 3Gs and more recently on my iPhone 4.0:
Once you log in to WTF via the app (which it will do automatically after initial set up) the main screen will show you all new posts since your last visit:
Or you can choose to browse by forum:
Once you've selected a forum, the interface is really slick. Notice there's a separate tab for "sticky" posts and "announcements" to keep the thread list very clean and quick on the mobile interface:
When you click on a thread, the application automatically knows the last post in the the thread you've visited, and takes you right to the newest post in the thread - very slick. The Tapatalk app also supports avatar graphics, and will display thumbnails of any photos in the posts. Tapping on a photo lets you see a full-screen view of the photo.
The app is super-fast, and posting new threads or replying to an existing post couldn't be more simple. Using the mobile version of Photobucket, I've actually replied to several wrist check threads.
The app also has push notification support for private messages and new posts. It really provides very nice, comprehensive functionality for using WATCH TALK FORUMS "on the go."
Tapatalk has a free version, and an enhanced version for $2.99. I've been using the enhanced version and really like it.
WATCH TALK FORUMS also supports another app called Forum Runner:
Currently, Forum Runner supports the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. Future versions will include Android and Blackberry support.
Like Tapatalk, Forum Runner has both a free version, and a "pay" version - currently I'm testing out the free version. So far, the functionality seems very similar to Tapatalk:
In terms of speed and capabilities, I'm not seeing much of a difference between the two apps, but it's an unfair comparison as I'm using the pay version of Tapatalk, and the free version of Forum Runner. In the iPhone Appstore, the pay version of Tapatalk is $2.99, and the pay version of Forum Runner is $1.99. I would encourage you to try both - let me know if you see a strong functional difference between the two!
Happy mobile computing!
