My 2007 Marine Star seems to have stopped running. Put new battery in less than a year ago and it was running up until about a month or so. The new battery doesn't seem to do any good and have tried more than one battery. Thought about sending to Bulova but then thought you people would know if that is a good idea or, perhaps, I should send it somewhere else. I haven't been on this forum and kind of lost interest in my watches after Sky Pilot passed away, he was a very good friend and got me interested in the old Accutrons. I like the looks of this Marine Star and would like to keep it running. Thanks for any tips.

Welcome back to WTF! 'Sky Pilot' was a good friend to a number of people on this forum and he will be remembered that way. I'm not sure what movement yours has, but my Marine Star from that era had a Miyota GM10 quartz movement inside and I believe Esslinger only charges $10 for the same replacement movement. Any watch repair guy should be able to swap out the movements without too much trouble, particularly if you provide him with the new one.

SkyPilot was the best!! Toward the end of our careers he would often say, "I am looking forward to watching you in retirement", as he knew I had many hobbies and would have a chance to enjoy them. Unfortunately, he never got to see it. He probably would have been disappointed as all the hobbies I have with fishing, hunting etc., I just don't do as much of now. Part of the reason probably is that I lost a bit of interest after he left. We were friends and worked together for 37 years. Anyway, enough of that, 10.00 for a movement in, what was, a 300.00 watch seems unreal. I couldn't put it in if I had one but that is good to know. I think the model number is 96D14.

Just got an estimate to repair from a watch guy about 75 miles from me. Told me it needed a complete service (whatever that is). Told me it would be 150.00. I have other watches. I think I will pass.

While you had him on the phone, you should have asked him what "a complete service" entails.

I don't know what the standard of living is like where you are, but up here, $150 is roughly the going rate for servicing
if you're not a repeat-customer of the repair shop. I see my regular watch guy several times a year which grants me discounts on services or a "no charge" on a replacement part.

A 'complete service' usually involves a tear down, inspection of parts, cleaning, lubrication, re-assembly and regulating along with a cleaning of the case if needed. That should buy you another 10-15 yrs of trouble-free wearing and $150 is right in-line for that work. It comes down to whether the watch has any sentimental value to you & whether its worth repairing. It will though make it an attractive buy for someone if you decide to sell it.
