Any thoughts about this? 1966? What year did the 218 movement come into being?
The dial is a little odd, looks like a railway approved but does not say so.
Going to take a look in person Friday. View attachment 38453
I think you will find the line below the center pinion reads "RR 218" with the supposed meaning being
Railroad Approved.

As for the quoted date, I suspect that is a bit premature however could be possible.
There is provenance there indicating mid 1967...

Yeah, I'm watching it.

Don't know if what you posted is from The Bay but here is one like your pic. Item #360691361618. It is unusual to find black inset numerals, the "0" and the different color second hand but those are characteristics found on this model. Canadian as has been discussed previously? A unique variation of the 218 RR.

I don't see any "buy it now" on the listing...

I could not remember if the 218 caliber appeared in '65 or '66 so thanks for the jog
there Oliver.

That watch appears to have an original strap and appears to be in fairly good condition.

Even with the back full of engraving, it looks like a decent piece. I haven't "kicked the can"
yet, waiting to see what action it generates tomorrow before making an offer {bid}.

The seller told me that he had a few offers to sell it at 'their own buy it now price'
I see this a lot in the medal collecting world. People trying it on with unsuspecting sellers. Trying to score a cheap medal and denying other bidders a chance to participate. A personal pet peeve of mine.

I suspect that RalphDjr is correct, that it says R under the hour hand.
OliverB is correct, all of the literature says that the the 218 came out in 1965 but I have an M4.
I wonder if Bulova started a run of the cases ahead of the movement release? I don't recall seeing the month of release for the 218s like we have for the first 214 in Oct. 1960. Someone who was a dealer at the time may know.

Skypilot: It would be interesting to see if there is a manufacture date stamped on the inside of the case back of your 218. I would think the 218 cases were new to that model line and had not been used for any other mechanical movements - especially with the stem at the 4 o'clock position.

OK, here are some "quick and dirty" pictures of the M4 218.

As you can see, it was made in Switzerland, the case number appears to be 9385 and it is a very clean watch which appears to have been worn very little. So far I haven't seen another M4 but I haven't looked very hard.

Well, it went for about the right price for a 14kt presentation watch... I didn't bid as presentation pieces
just don't speak that loud to me... :)

I looked it over I person. Very nice. Recently serviced. Very nice lizard strap. It was the sellers fathers. He was hoping for $350.
I dropped out at $300.
Really did like that strap. Will I had gone further.
