    The salvagers have their work cut out for them...The Stephen L. is a rather sizeable boat!!!

    Here's a shot I found of it on one of its better days (while doing a newspaper search for the maritime accident)

    Piloting a towboat is a lost art that is handed down from generation to generation. The complexity of the Mississippi River bottom with its sand bars that change from season to season, is something that takes years to learn. A towboat that size can push 15 barges, each with a payload of 2000 tons. This configuration makes for a tow 1/4 of a mile long. The slightest miscalculation when coming upon a bend in the Mississippi with a full tow, can be a disaster. I worked on these vessels in the mid 70's during the summer one year while in college. It was an experience I'll never forget.
