A routine service with basic cleanliness would have saved this coil. The stabby part stuck to the fork looks like it has been there rubbing for a long time. The coil's open now.

When I clean a Tuning Fork I am always amazed how much metal I pull off the fork cups with radico. I am not exactly sure where the metal comes from but it is definitely there. That looks like a very large piece. Maybe from the battery cover?

Hmm--Interesting to see as well, the Cracks in the varnish coating of the coil near the former....

I was balled out as a heretic when I said this years ago, but there it is, clear as day.....

I've seen some where the protective coating definitely shrank and pulled the windings apart. I suppose there are all sorts of forces down inside the coil. This one was still running...
