    Default Servicing?

    Hi all,

This is my first post in a few years, in the past I was usually blubbering about my father's Accutron. I have a question on my other watch, however:

    * Tag Aquaracer Auto WAF2112. Bought new 9 years ago, never been serviced. I'm wondering whether or not to service it now? I don't really take it in the water anymore, and as far as timekeeping it is a few seconds slow per day now (it was a few seconds fast when originally purchased). I know you are supposed to have these things serviced every 5 years at least per what Tag will tell you, but honestly - I don't have ~$200 or so laying around just to ship it off to the Service Center on a whim. I'm guessing a complete overhaul of the movement over and above a full service would be even more expensive. I can get it done if absolutely necessary, just would prefer not to if it's not crucial. I've read other posts here and there about not servicing these watches at all unless they really show problems or stop. Just not sure what to believe / what the most up-to-date thinking on this subject is.

    Thanks,
    -John

I am not expert but if it was me and knowing it has been in the water in the past and may no longer get that kind of use, I would consider having it serviced and cleaned. IMHO

I would probably have it serviced if i wanted to keep it running well over the long term. Servicing prevents (or at least slows down) wear & tear which if not done leads to parts breaking. It gets expensive when parts have to be replaced.

Just to embellish on what has already been said:
Whether idle for years or worn every day, the lubricants break down and/or evaporate (maybe a clue as to why the TAG has gone from fast to slow).
I don't believe you'll need a Service Center for a simple cleaning and oiling, especially since the watch's warranty expired long ago. Just take it to a local watchmaker. Unless you live in a high cost-of-living part of the country, a C&O should be closer to $125 than $200. Unless something is very wrong, I can't see where an overhaul of the watch is needed.
It's true that recommended periodic servicing is every 5 years. Some people have it done every 4 years. Some, 10 years. Others wait until something breaks. I look at it as preventative maintenance....just like with my car (or boat motor or lawnmower engine). I don't wait until the engine seizes up before changing the motor oil. I spend my money on a service at 5-year intervals instead of waiting X number of years, until something breaks, and I wind up spending 3-4 times as much!
