: Need help picking a strap for an old Bulova

I have an heirloom Bulova that came from my father-in-law. His wrists are a bit smaller than mine, so now the stretch strap that Bulova provided is really a bit tight for me. I'd like to replace it with something that looks like it belongs with the watch. I'd actually prefer not another stretch, but rather a link strap with deployant. Maybe a leather strap with deployant if it goes, but I think a metal strap would work better.

The inside distance of the lugs s 17.5mm, so I'm thinking I can only use a16mm strap - 18mm wouldn't work, would it? When they size a strap is it right on, a little bigger, or a little smaller?

The face has a beautiful sunburst effect; here's a pic. Doesn't really do justice to the color. It's actually bright gold.

Personally, I'd stick with leather. I don't care for the damage most metal bands do to the lugs. JMO

Okay Hawk. I'd appreciate any suggestion you could make. I wasn't sure a leather band would work with this kind of old style watch with a gold finish. For some reason I've seen silver or SS finishes looking very good with a brown strap, but I think I'd have a harder time for something like that to look good on a gold finish.

I have dark brown and black on various gold plated watches, and they look fine and are comfortable.

Vintage American watches tended to use fractions of an inch rather than millimeters. 17.5mm is just about 11/16''. Look up WTF member timesofplenty, (Scott Allison 19mm, 18mm items in Vintage Watch Band store on eBay! (http://stores.ebay.com/timesofplenty-vintage-watch-bands) . He carries 11/16" straps.

Good advice; thanks to all. I was looking at various gold bands and I realized that if I don't find one that is the exact same color as the watch case it probably wouldn't be the way to go.

I went to Scott's store on eBay and picked out this one.

Vintage Watch Band 18mm 11 16 034 Speidel Long Lizard USA Old Stock Strap Mint | eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Watch-Band-18mm-11-16-Speidel-Long-Lizard-USA-Old-Stock-Strap-Mint-nos-/371290127362?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item56729dbc02)

It looks like it will go great with my Bulova, and I like the idea that I'm staying vintage. Now all I need is a good deployant clasp, but I don't think RHK makes one that's sized at 14mm, which is what it looks like I'd need for this strap.

When my own watchguy doesn't have something like that, I usually check watchbandusa .com

Nice choice Tony. I think you'll be happy with it.

I just got the new strap from Scott of timesofplenty. As great looking as I hoped it would be. Here's a pic with it on, and the old stretch strap by its side for comparison. I like it!

BTW in real life the strap is just a bit darker.

I think that's a perfect match for your watch!
