Since they are both made by Seiko, are the 4R36 and the NH35A movements the same execpt for designation numbers?

I am no expert but I think you are mistaken. The NH35A movement is the Seiko japan equivalent of the 6R15B movement and not the 4r. The 4 series like the 7s series does not hack or handwind while the NH35a can do both and so can the 6r15B. Unless they upgraded the 4r series I think my information is correct which means the NH35A movement is a very good reliable yet dependable movement. I personally if I had to choose between eta 2824 or nh35a ans had no other watch this was my only choice I would go with the NH35A not becausenI think it is better as I think the Swiss movement is with the higher beat rate BUT reliability and out of the box accuracy and less service requirements make me choose the Seiko. If I only have one then sending it in every 20 year's or so is acceptable.

I'm pretty sure the newer generation 4R35/36 series calibers have hand-winding & hackable stop seconds hand as he's asking about, which would put the NH35A in the family I think.

Guys, Here's a video showing one of the new 4R36 powered Monster's, the video shows the hand winding & the hacking seconds abilities, as well as the quick set day & date changes...

I believe these calibers including the 6R's, are great movements and they are the next evolution of the 7S26/36 cailbers which have a longevity now that exceeds any other seiko caliber I believe, so it appears seiko is slowly gaining ground with the recent upgrades.

Glad to help & confirm that Rick...

You'll enjoy the movement and longevity in either of them, they're great workhorses with quality builds IMO. Yes finally we have available, some affordable fine hand winding & hacking seconds caliber's housed inside bullet-proof stainless steel cases that are more than dive capable toolish designs!
