Default Why a pilot? (Help me pull the trigger!)

I'm writing to seek some expertise, or a justification to "pull the trigger"...

I can't seem to stop admiring the IWC Classic Pilot (IW371701) and IWC Pilot Mark XVI (3255-01). However I have no logical basis for an additional watch purchase (my current watches are below).

What I'm wondering is, What are the objective qualities that make a pilot watch different than a regular watch? And as a side question, What's the justification for spending a lot more on an IWC, when a Hamilton pilot with ETA movement can be had for a lot less?

There's something about holding the IWC, but I'm having a hard time justifying it to myself or my significant other!

    Thanks.

(Current watches: Rolex Datejust, Zenith Elite, Tag Heuer Aquaracer, Tissot PR50)

If you feel that you have no logical basis to add another watch to your collection and cannot justify the purchase, I don't see how anyone can say anything to change your mind/feelings.

I think that's a good point: Is there any logical basis to buy any mechanical watch? Probably not, but I love the ones I have, and covet several others. The IW371701 definitely gets my vote. I passed up a good deal on one when they first came out, and have regretted it since.

Thank you, but perhaps I can rephrase my original qustion... I didn't mean to ask about the logical basis for getting a mechanical watch; clearly anyone can get a more accurate quartz for $15. What I meant to say was:

From the perspective of a watch enthusiast/watch geek, what is special about an IWC pilot watch (versus, say, a simple Rolex Datejust)? What makes a pilot a pilot? I appreciate the IW371701 aesthetically, but I'd be grateful if anyone has any expertise on it on a more objective or technical level. I don't want to buy it just because it "looks cool", even though that's what caused it to catch my eye as a thing of beauty.

Secondly, I do hope that someone can shed a little light on why an IWC might be worth the additional outlay over a Hamilton pilot. Again, just from your perspective as an IWC enthusiast (since I assume that's why you're on this forum). If not that's okay.

I appreciate any help or advice you can give. Thanks again.

In that light, why choose a Rolex Datejust over any Hamilton?

    OK I guess I'm sorry I asked.

Thanks for your time, and thanks to anyone else reading this thread for taking the time.

I don't understand... Are you somehow offended by the question?

No I'm not offended, but I have to admit I was hoping that this forum would allow me to share in the knowledge of IWC enthusiasts who love the watches and might be willing to vocalize why.

Flipping the question back on me was perfectly legitimate, but (and I say this totally without sarcasm) if I had the answer I wouldn't ask the question.

Hm,, i think i might understand the question ( correct me if I'm wrong though)

IWC has quite a distinctive brand image IMO compare to several brands out there... ( don't get mistaken, i love my Hammy though... but yes, there's something about IWC brand) , I believe only certain people with certain knowledge of watches would recognize the IWC watches,, whereas many many others will recognize Rolexes relative easily...

but again the "magnet" of a watch(es) to every eyes are very personal IMO. To me 3717 really has all a watch should have , perfect size ( for my wrist) , has a useful day date function ( for my daily purposes) and a chrono which a kind of additional toy, as whenever you look at them you always want to push the start stop button and so on

looking at your current collections , it seems the 3717 will fit perfectly between them. Well, you might not be able to fly a plane by owning it, but this pilot watch will certainly makes your smile wider every time you enjoying your collections...

    just my 2 cents

    Cheers !

The Mark XVI is on my 'grail' list . I have absolutely no reason to covet this watch over others, it just 'sings' to me, and that's all that really matters .
Sorry I can't be more objective, but objectivity must be left at the door when pursuing this crazy thing....
Good luck with the hunt, either watch will be a fantastic addition to your collection.
Oh, and a tip, don't repeat the phrase 'a simple Rolex Datejust' anywhere near the Rolex forum...
