    Guys,

My old prosumer camera is about at the end of it's life. I am just wondering if anyone here have great experiences with good compact. We all know dslr is the standard but compact PnS can be with you all the time, right? :D

    Thanks!

This summer I've been using a Cannon SD1000. It's small and it was dirt cheap....160.00 from Amazon. I wouldn't think about using it as my primary camera. But it's fun for wrist shots, or throwing in your pocket when you don't want to lug around the pro stuff.

Are you looking for a mostly outdoor camera? If so, try the Pentax Optio "W" line. I think the W30 is the current one. I've had the W10 for about 2 years and love it. Small enough to fit in a chest-pocket and takes fantastic outdoor pictures. It's waterproof for the pool, lake or ocean (to 15 feet), dust-proof & shockproof. I've used mine for just about everything outdoor when I didn't want the dSLR or I'm around water. Only bad thing is indoor photo quality is just OK. Not bad, but just OK. But in fairness this is a camera designed for the outdoors adventurer, not indoors. The macro is good, and works underwater too.

If you want to see some sample pictures from it, take a look at this thread:

All pictures are from underwater shots except the last 3. No PhotoShop done except cropping.

Olympus makes some weather-resistant and drop-resistant models. At this point, my go-to compact is a mint Leica D-Lux 2. Last generation and a bit noisy at higher ISOs, but that is what Noise Ninja was made to cure.

I tested the G9. It's solidly built and it takes RAW files as well but it has difficulty focusing on Macro mode, kinda slow. It could be that the lighting wasnt bright enough at the mall. Strangely the affordable Canon Powershot A460 is very adapt at Macro shot once you turn it to Super Macro mode. Camera hunting is driving me nuts as I am looking for a DSLR too.

I've heard stellar reviews of the Canon G9. I've no experience with it, though...

Yeap, so far the reviews on the G9 have been good, with the only complainst that it came out not too long after the G7. If I remember correctly, CL owns one and if he starts working with it, I'll take those reviews more seriuously. BTW I saw a posting that the upcoming Lumix LX3 will be a strong contender to the G9.

My wife has a Lumix (maybe two years old), and it's a nice little camera...
