    Default Same Old Question.....

    Hi Guys

Been mod at the Hamilton forum since 2009 and admit to occassionally rolling my eyes to the never ending string of "just inherited this from Grandad; what is it and what's it worth?" posts.

    Well, I'm now that poster

I'm an expat living in Zambia; three weeks ago a work colleague's father passed away. As the office "watch guy" she has come to me seeking advice about her father's Patek; the usual questions: What's it worth, what would be the best way to sell it etc. There's no thought of passing the watch onto a family member; the family are all keen to convert the assets to cash. Being in Zambia it is not as easy as putting it on ebay - ebay and PayPal don't operate here and, even they did, there's no way the watch could be sent out by couriers such as FedEx or DHL. (I have had a $20K down hole probe vanish in transit and also a CD of data - in both cases the courier company could not even hazard a guess at where the items had got to - so much for shipment tracking).

I've asked my colleague for details regarding the watch but she has no idea when or where it was purchased.

So - would very much appreciate if you could let me know what she has, the best market for it (US, Europe, ebay etc etc) and what she could expect to receive from (a) a reseller or (b) a collector. I suppose the biggest question is how active is the market for a watch such as this?

    Many thanks in advance.

Default Its a real PP - refernce 36544

Now for the bad news. That model is really not in demand and will sell for very much close to gold value.
If you cannot get the piece out of Zambia then then excecise is futile but I could give you the neame of a delaer in Jhb.

Do not expect much and if there is any chnace the piece has a value to one of the members of the family , dont sell.

If you have to sell, then dont expect more than 2-3K from a dealer, possibly a little more from a callector

Youll get a few hundred for the box and sadly I would expect some one to remove the gold bracelet and melt it down ;-(

Its a real shame these old PP are not desirable.....

    Thanks for posting

Thanks Julian, all comments very much appreciated. I will contact you off line for the JHB contact details.

Are you able to let me know a little about the watch? Approximate date of manufacture, likely movement - and why it may not be attractive to collectors? (Is it just the style/design that's holding it back or are there some fundamental issues with this model?

    Hey Roger,

I can't add any better info than Julian did. But if you want the history on the watch have the owner email Patek Philippe directly with the serial number off the movement. From what I've read Patek is pretty good on getting the date information based on serial number on the movement. It's probably the best way to get accurate information on when it was made and which calibre it is.

Default most likely 1970's movement is a manual wind cal 215

Nothing wrong with this watch at all. it is just not desirable and the integrated bracelet brings down the value even further( strange!)

As always, Julian....your advice about vintage pieces on this forum is ALWAYS greatly appreciated.
