    Default 5205G V 5726A which to choose...........

I have very suddenly got the opportunity to buy one of these beautiful pieces.

But I like both of them for slightly different reasons.

Several months ago, I had the opportunity to try on a "Dummy" version of the 5205G which had the darker dial, and I thought it was just perfect, the size was right so was the weight and the apertures were easy to read.

Then a couple of weeks ago, I tried on the 5726A and I was quite surprised by how heavy it was and how chunky it looked and felt.

Both pieces sit on my wrist very nicely.

Now I am of two minds, do I go down the sports route (5726) with its rugged good looks, unique style case, luminous hands/batons and that 120m water depth. And guarantee. But with a set of slightly smaller apertures that are easily covered up by both the minute and hour hands.

Or the equally new and beautiful 5205G with it's 40mm diameter case, very different concave designed case and the lugs which appear to have been sculptured. The apertures are better, imo located and will not be blocked quite so much. As well as being easier to read.

Now you are probably saying well these are two very different designed pieces (true) with the same complications, so can't you (I) decide on which one, well the simple answer is no!!

I have sold on most of my small collection and so this will be my main piece. Apart from two Omegas (Chronograph and a 34mm piece from 1958) as well as my good old faithful Casio G Shock.

Now I shall make my own mind up once I have been able to see the 5205G again.

But if you were I, which one would you go for and why??

Do I what sport or classic???
    Cheers
    Tony

I tried these both in Geneve. they're very different. My reservation on the 5726 is that it is a bit chunky, so the 5205 is probably sleeker fitting, particularly if you have a slimmer wrist. the water depth to me is immaterial as I couldn't imagine diving with my patek on. the darker gray is my preference over the lighter gray in the 5205. they're both beautiful pieces. don't lose sleep over one vs the other.

    Hey Tony,

Sorry pal.. Honestly I saw the thread & mistook it for the 5276 / 5712 thread... Oops..

Wow, what a choice. They're both absolute stunners, and either would be a perfect watch. What's your more typical wardrobe? Business casual and/or jeans & a button down or a suit 5 days a week? I like the 5276, but not sure it's the better option here for a suit every day. Not that it couldn't, but IMO the 5205 just does suit-duty better. However if you like a bit more rugged & beefier look then the 5276 is probably a better option.

Just a few pictures for everyone to see & comment.

    5276:

    5205:

Now that said, if it was me, then it's the 5205. I like the 5276, it's my favorite Nautilus. However, these are the reasons I'd go with the 5205G:

    • A dressier watch. I have enough sport watches. And even if I didn't sport watches are easy to come by, and there's more good choices in sport watches than dress watches IMO. Even though the Nautilus would be the ultimate sport watch, IMO there's very few dress watches that compare to a Patek.
    • Like you I don't care for the 'standard' aperture locations on the 5276 as much as the perimeter version on the 5205. IMO that perimeter version makes the 5135, 5960 & 5205 perfect IMO. Plus, like you said, the 5276 will have more 'cover-up' time with those apertures vs. the 5205's which have virtually none.
    • Love the two-toned dial of the 5205. Gives a dress watch a bit of flair making it a perfect dress-down watch as well.
    • Love the 40mm case size of the 5205. Small enough for a dress watch, but big enough for a sport watch.
    • It's a watch for (almost) every occasion. Black tie, business suit, business casual or casual. A perfect watch for all.
    • It's just so classic Patek looking.

And the one that really puts it over the edge IMO:

Those sculptured lugs are absolute art-on-the-wrist.

Anyways, there's my thought for whatever it's worth. While I love the changes Patek put into the 5276 and it's my favorite Nautilus, the 5205 is just the perfect Patek to me. So for this choice, it's really not a choice for me.

    Winner - 5205G!

Whichever you get, I look forward to seeing a picture of it gracing your wrist soon pal. An early congrats!

5205 (probably the lighter colored model pictured above). I agree completely with everything that Scott said. I feel like it would be a bit more versatile given its size and style. And PP will always sort of be a dress watch company to me, and one of the very best. Get an amazing example of what made the company great to begin with.

Of course, it all comes down to personal choice. I look forward to hearing about your decision.

Default Scott & Hoffman many thanks for your valued input.....................

As well as a number of considerations that have to be taken into account.

I have been honoured by my AD with a two day all expense paid visit, to the Patek Philippe Manufacture & Museum next month.

And apart from seeing how Patek design and produce their marvellous timepieces, I shall get the opportunity to see and presumbly try on some of their more complicated pieces.

But not only that, I should be able to try on both the 5205 & 5726 and see which one I like the most.

Then it will just be a matter of waiting for the piece to arrive at my AD's.
    Cheers
