1990 3970 , more of a vintage look, with leaf hands, or 5970G , cool dial, nice size..

    Arthur,

first of all, thank you for sharing those two beauties with us
(Hope you do not mind - I edited your post as the pictures were not showing. Inserting
of the pictures is a little different here. Very easy actually - just click on the 'insert image'
icon in the message window and past the link directly (without any code)

    Now to your question.....
WOW !! ....For many - both watches would be the pinnacle of Patek collecting, and you are
fortunate to have both.....For me it would be a VERY tough call, if I could keep
    only one.
Undoubtedly - 3970 is such a classic and well balanced watch from
any aspect. It looks like a classy watch that I would wear on a special occasion.
5970, OTOH with it's slightly larger 40mm case is looks 'slightly' more modern
and it seems that it could be worn on 'dressy' as well as 'casual' occasions.
But who knows, maybe it's just the metals and I would look the same way at 3970
if it was in WG or Platinum.
I guess because of that - I would give 5970 a slight edge, because if I had a watch
like this - I would want to wear it as much as I could - with a suit as well as jeans !!
(not to say that 3970 does not look great on you as you are wearing it with jeans in 3rd picture :D)

As I said ....a VERY tough call. Be thankful to have both :)

    Hi Arthur
For what its worth and the limited knowledge that I have got about PP and probably by looks alone I would have to say that for me the 5970 is a truly stunning watch in every aspect.
Though saying that I would be proud to wear either watch.
But in this case looking at the photos the W/G or Platinum (not sure which) of the 5970 gives it the edge.
Congratulations on such gorgeous looking watches and welcome to the forum.

I would go with door number one but, would be thrilled to have either. Lucky man, now excuse me while I wipe up the drool from my desk.

    Default 3970 2nd series dial...

Although these pictures our not mine (courtesy of Paul Boutros) I think they best capture the beauty of the 2nd series 3970 (leaf hands):
