Default Hi guys, this letter is from the heart, and I need lots of help

Hi guys, this letter is from the heart, and I need lots of help for a major love decision, so to speak, in regard to Omega vs. Rolex

I am a design consultant engineer that gets work designing medical instruments, tools and medical fixtures by contract. I do design work from home and deliver the new design to my clients. So I’m kind of technical guy and really don’t care much on luxury, so to speak. What I like is good craftsmanship, technical design , machines and good engineering creations. I have the money by saving enough to get myself a nice piece of watch. I love Omega but I also love the Rolex Sub. I am in between Omega Seamaster PO 2201.50.00 or a Rolex Sub two tone SS+18K. Now my heart is telling me to get the Omega Seamaster PO. I have an older Seamaster but I’m getting lost with love when looking at the Omega Seamaster PO 2201.50.00.

What should I do? Please help!

    Che,

PS: I'm a big guy, 6'5", use to play basketball and football when in college, and have a 7.8" (200mm) left wrist diameter :)

    Ooh difficult choice.

You know you actually want both

SO the question is does it have to be an either or proposition or could you find a way to raise money for both. I say this because though both watches are dive watches but aesthetically they're both very different beasts. On the one hand there's the old school charm of the rolex and then there's the very contemporary PO (in 42mm right?).

If you are going this route and saving up for both I'd advise you sell the current Omega and try to find a pre-owned PO and hopefully still be on target for Sub.

    regards

As many wise men have stated previously, it is just a question of 'which one first?' Both are excellent shoices

I don't think you could go wrong with either. They both sing to me, and I would get the PO for myself at the moment (unless it was the New Sub, then I would have to think on it).

Objectively, the PO is superior to the Sub but Rolex marketing suggests otherwise.

Two cautions regarding the TT Sub, the gold bezel, center-links and crown are easily damaged due to the softness of the gold. It is definitely not a tool watch like the PO. The second caveat is to avoid the Rolex ceramic bezel. The design is innately flawed in that the markers/numbers are recessed creating edges that can chip. Likewise the markers/numbers are applied by a "PVD-like" process and are susceptible to scratches.

For less money than the new Sub, you could go with the PO LiquidMetal. The LM ceramic bezel "one-ups" the Rolex in that the markers/numbers are flush with the ceramic and the LiquidMetal is three times stronger than stainless steel. The Omega ceramic bezel is virtually impervious to chipping and scratching.

But it's your money and your choice. Both are nice watches.

This is a no-lose situation! Either way you get a great watch. I would go with the PO and maybe think about the sub at a later date. I agree with the advice to look for a used PO. That way, you might be able to get them both in the near future.

Good luck with the decision and search if you decide to look for a used PO.

    best wishes,
    Jeff

    Really? How so?

Two cautions regarding the TT Sub, the gold bezel, center-links and crown are easily damaged due to the softness of the gold.
That's easily the most misleading statement I've read here on WTF this year. I've been a regular wearer of the 16613 Submariner for about 10 years. The center-links and crown are not "easily damaged." And yes, I've dived and snorkeled with a 16613 Submariner.

The second caveat is to avoid the Rolex ceramic bezel. The design is innately flawed in that the markers/numbers are recessed creating edges that can chip. Likewise the markers/numbers are applied by a "PVD-like" process and are susceptible to scratches.
I know you had this complaint with your TT GMT Master II which you sold. But your the first Rolex owner I've seen to actually have this complaint.

I have my issues with Omega's Co-Axial movements, but the PO is certainly a fine watch. But the blue dial on the 16613 is one of the most beautiful watch dials ever conceived IMHO.

Both are great watches, either way you win. Go with the idea of, if I can only have one watch in this lifetime, and see where that leads you.

    Cheers
