Greetings from a fellow Holmes fan. Your use name caught me eye, and I love your sig quote. :-)

Brett was the ultimate Holmes, IMHO. I don't recognize the chap in your current avatar photo...?

    Cheers!

Hi Dick. Checking in to see what's happening here after many moons away from this particular forum. I hope things are going well for you.

  6. LJ,

I'll have to limit the question to Basil Rathbone vs. Jeremy Brett. While there have been some good performances in non-canonical movies such as Nicholas Rowe in Young Sherlock Holmes, Rathbone and Brett are the two top portrayers of Holmes. That being said, I will go with the less popular opinion of Brett. He played Holmes with a touch of neuroses just as Doyle wrote the character. I thnk his portrayal in The Blue Carbuncle was the finest protrayal of Holmes I ever saw. Rathbone's portrayal slightly suffered from the time period it was filmed. While his Hound of the Baskervilles was a fine movie, the later movies were filmed in the 1940's and took place during wartime England. Holmes' character was updated to be the embodiment of England's "endeavor to perservere" as Churchill put it.
