Default Is Rolex worth the money?

I don't want to offend anyone but to me, Rolex watches have always seemed greatly overpriced and over valued. I mean, is a $5,000 Rolex really 10 times better than a $500 model from another another maker of quality watches or 20 times better than a $250 one? When I say better, I mean in terms of accuracy, reliability, and endurance. I highly doubt it. Personally, I would never pay more than $200 these days for a new watch and that would be really stretching the budget. $100 would probably be as high as I would go when I can get a reliable and highly accurate quartz model for $25 to $50 that would last for years. On antique or Vintage models, it's a different story of course. I'm talking about new.

    This won't go anywhere good.

If all you measure is accuracy, reliability, and endurance, then stock up on G-shocks and wear them with suits to show your class and sophistication.

I don't even own a tie, let alone a suit.

Right. You should be warned that most see thread titles like this and assume there's a troll factor involved. It's a very inflammatory subject. I'll answer anyway. Yes, they are worth the money relative to nearly every other Swiss manufacturer who makes their own complete line of in-house movements. If you don't like them then buy something else though. For that kind of money a watch should speak to you.

(Figuratively, that is. If it really speaks to you spend the cash on psychiatric help. )
Can you help me fix my watch?..Where does this: go inside this?: I guess that's what I get for buying it on eBay!!!

If you add quality of materials then yes it is that much better.

And on top of that, there's a higher resale value for Rolex.

I'm absolutely sure there's a higher resale value. In fact I absolutely know there is. I've just never understood what makes them cost so much more than other watches that can look just as classy and run just as well. I think it's a lot to do with having the name Rolex on the watch and less to do with the actual differences in quality.

Hey, it only took 7 posts for you to figure it out!

While Rolex makes a fine watch, and one of only a very very few that are truly "in house", they have done perhaps the best job of any company in history in marketing what is in reality a mass produced product as a true luxury item.

Keep in mind that in luxury items, like high end watches, cost and price are rarely directly linked.

Back to your original question, you can only answer for yourself. For ME, I would not own a Rolex because I think if your spending that kind of money, there should be a level of uniqueness/exclusivity that Rolex does not provide. Here in Houston, you can't spit without hitting a Submariner (and in the rare instance you could, someone surely has a GMT, Explorer, or Datejust nearby)

The exception that proves the rule.

Rolex is a luxury item so value can somewhat be thrown out the window. Only you and your checkbook can decide if what they have to offer (great in-house movement, better materials, heritage, etc) is worth your money or not. There are aspects of my Submariner that are clearly superior to my other watches, but you pay dearly for these relatively small benefits. The point of diminishing returns really comes into play when when talking about any watch that costs more than about $500.
