Default Movado ESQ vs. Citizen Eco-Drive

    Hello All,

This is my first post on here.

I am going to purchase one of these watches listed below. I like these all black watches with a square face. Which one is a better watch? I am not referring to the styling so please keep any negative comments to yourself. I already know I like these. I am referring to the mechanics of the watch. Which watch is better made? Is more reliable? Will hold it's value throughout my lifetime? What are the pros and cons of each?

I wish you liked them "round" I'd love for you to have my Citizen "Stiletto" which is solid black PVD coated and eco drive.

"Swiss made" when it comes to quartz is irrelevant. They're quartz movements, they're all accurate. Eco-Drive is probably a cooler innovation then you never need to use a battery.

I think I would go with the first Citizen.

Interesting... thanks for the replies and the offer, but it is not what I am looking for.

I have added a few more to the list... the black movado esq is deceptively stunning in real life. The picture does not do it justice. It is so sleek and modern yet classic. Because I know most of you love automatics I have added one to the list. I want to keep the price under $500.

    4. Movado ESQ Chronicle - automatic and has date feature

5.Movado ESQ Prescott - love the look and more features but sadly not automatic

    6. Movado ESQ Quest - more features...

To be honest I do not know too much at all about watches... but I do know that I love whatever ESQ watches I have seen in person. To me, style is a big component of a watch. I previously owned a fossil which was given to me by my brother. Unfortunately it broke, one of the dials simply fell off.

I work in the prison system and can't bring in a phone for security reasons and need to monitor time for facilitation of groups and individual therapy. Hence my need for a watch, otherwise I never wear watches, but may on special occasions. My fiance purchased the ESQ Venture in all black after we saw it and I raved about it but I could return it and get anything and she would not mind at all.

My style is modern, sleek, and clean enough for me to be able to pull it off, but it would upset me if automatic was truly the way to go. Also are these ESQ watches made "in house" with "craftsmanship"? What watches would you guys recommend to me for around $500 or less as I could never spend more than this on a watch? Are there any automatics in all black and square? preferably with moon phase? haha maybe I am asking for too much here. i think i need a custom watch built.

No problem. Happy to offer suggestions!

Adding an automatic or mechanical watch in any way will give you a very unique experience. Quartz is fine but mechanical watches are really very special to me.

Love all of them but of course I'd want you in the automatic so you can have something that makes your piece unique versus 95% of the watch population!

A chronograph would let you time your sessions and meetings and might be the best watch for your specific needs. Quartz is almost always more accurate than a mechanical watch because it is a computer that is designed to only know 60 second intervals. You likely cannot find a Swiss made automatic with a chronograph movement for less than $700 new or used. There are some but not many. The chronograph movement with "Swiss" designation is a Valjoux 7750.

ESQ is not an in house company. At the $500 price range the only in house mechanical watches you will find are Japanese. Specifically Orient and Seiko. Any ESQ automatic would likely have (depending on complication) an ETA 2824, 2836, or 2839. The one you showed us has an ETA 2824. 28,800 beats per minute, 40+ hour power reserve, date display and centered second hand. I have a few watches with this movement. It is tried, true, and very nice! Moonphase is likely out of the price range for a Swiss automatic (Gevril/GV2 has a bunch of moon phases but are quartz). There are some Japanese mechanical watches that have moon phase in your price range.

I'll follow up with some more recommendations.

Tissot is an amazing watch for the money, I'd like you to look at them. Here is one that I don't know much about but looks (without the ugly band) like something you could enjoy.

This specific watch is too much for you at about $1100 but the brand Hamilton would have some amazing options for you. This is just one I wanted you to see.

I think this watch is stupid but it has some of the features you're looking for. (Don't buy it)

    Gevril quartz ($500 - $600)

    A warm welcome to WTF!!!

I have no personal experience with ESQ, but I would recommend anything by Citizen.

All I know about ESQ is that they are low-end Movados, and that's NOT a recommendation by any stretch of the imagination. Meanwhile, from "another watch site", the members have complained about problems with the bracelets and cases that are not at all water-resistant.

I currently own 3 Citizens- 2 regular chronographs and a atomic-time Skyhawk. Very impressed with the accuracy of the reg. chronos and quite happy with the fit, finish, and quality of all 3.

I'd say get any of the Citizens...you won't be sorry.

I'd say that it all depends on your preference. They are two completely different watches and frankly both would fit into a collection nicely.

ESQ and Citizen are both solid brands, in my judgement, and the battery issue is not that important since batteries last so long these days.

I'd say that if you want a chronograph, get the Citizen. If you want a basic watch with diamonds on the dial, get the ESQ.

I'm very fond of chronographs, but in this case, I think the ESQ is the better looking watch and much more elegant than the Citizen.

The Citizen dial is far too busy for a watch of that style and on a watch like that, I think the chronograph is superfluous.

I have the ladies version of the esq venture, i recommend u the mens version. But u should also consider citizen, their eco drives are awesome. The difference between movado and esq is that movador are swiss made n esq are swiss quartz, the only difference is the country of assembly, (movado, swiss-esq , japan) but both have swiss components and are inspected in the mentioned watch wonder country

I don't own any Citizen timepieces so I can't comment on them. I do However own an ESQ timepiece and I'm very happy with it and would buy another ESQ again.
