Thanks for the replies guys - I really appreciate them - but I do have a follow up question if that is OK?

Who adapted the watch - The original makers, a third party jeweller or some other company?

Also I have been interested in the change over from pocket watches to wrist watches and wondered whether that was a worthwhile area on which to focus a collection. Is that a worthwhile place to start, or am I just asking for trouble?

    Thanks in advance.

Could have been either, I suspect strongly in this case a Jeweller did it afterwards, but I have an Omega Chronograph pocket watch which I am sure Omega adapted for wrist
    BUT
    In most cases Jewellers afterwards

And personally, I think wrist watch collecting is more useful, as the watches can be worn. But others may disagree. It has to be a personal choice.

Do they exist or are a majority of older watches under 40MM?
There are plenty of 40+ mm watches around from the 70's, especially chronographs. It's a little harder to find them fromt he 50's and 60's, and most of those models are very sought after like the JLC Polaris, Breitling Navitimer, or Longines Legend Diver.

So I guess they do exist, I know nothing about this watch or the brand but its nice to know larger watches did exist.
Wakmann had some type of business partnership or arrangement with Breitling for a few decades. Tom (Vintagehamiltons) has one or two Wakmann chronos that are very nice, are over 40 mm, and weren't ridiculously expensive - although I don't think you'd call them beginner's watches simply because most of them sell for more than the average vintage watch of that era. They're still generally less expensive than their Breitling counterparts.
Can you help me fix my watch?..Where does this: go inside this?: I guess that's what I get for buying it on eBay!!!

I have some vintage watches that wear bigger because of their design. A smaller bezel will insure that the dial and crystal are bigger and make look +2 MM larger that they really are.
